CSUDH students, faculty, staff, and members of the community will volunteer their service on beautification and renewal projects at local non-profit organizations and on campus, including:

YWCA Child Development Center in Compton

A beautification project to enrich the learning environment of preschool children attending YWCA. Educational outreach project to extend meaningful learning at home.

Our CSUDH Jumpstart for Young Children Program has been working with the Compton YWCA to ensure the preschoolers are starting to read by the time they enter kindergarten. Our Jumpstart students help to promote social justice to Compton youth by helping to level the playing field by mitigating the educational disparities that act as barriers to social and economic mobility.

Service: Beautification project. Volunteers will help sanitize two preschool classrooms, build a small herb/vegetable garden outside to help demonstrate sustainability education, and create educational activities for children to take home.

Cultivating Living Labs: Heritage Creek and Campus Urban Farm Beautification Day

The Office of Sustainability, housed under the department of Facilities Services, works collaboratively with stakeholders in administration, academics, and student services to promote and implement sustainability practices across campus. It also provides maintenance for two campus Living Laboratories: the Campus Urban Farm and the Heritage Creek native bioswale.

Location: CSUDH (On campus)- Campus Urban Farm and Heritage Creek

Service:
• Native Garden care (Heritage Creek):  Rebuild walking trail, remove weeds, and apply mulch to native plants, shrubs, and trees. Replant native species as needed.
• Farm:  repaint nursery shed, help build vertical garden towers, maintain student green waste compost pile experiments, create a gravel entryway to the Farm, and other maintenance tasks as needed. Sign up to volunteer

Stevenson Park Transforming the community through ART

The City of Carson and CSUDH will partner on a community art day where students from CSUDH will be teaching art workshops to Carson residents throughout the morning at Stevenson’s Park.
